Department Overview
The goal of the Orange City Parks and Recreation Department is to provide our citizens with a wide range of activities. The type of activities that we are offer will hopefully be activities that can connect people in the community, as well as create life long interest in these activities. We want to create beautiful parks, and high quality programming that can benefit not only our community, but to people new to the area or that are from the surrounding area.
Parks and Recreation Highlights
- 7 great parks with many amenities
- A department that has over 2,500 citizens participating in programming each year
- 64 different recreational and leisure opportunities throughout the year
- 5.5 miles of trails, with a trails task force planning for additional routes
- One of NW Iowa’s only dog parks, located in the heart of Orange City
- A department that uses joint efforts to provide the best opportunities for leisure and recreation, with gyms, playing fields, tennis courts, and sand volleyball.

Baseball
1st – 4th grade
June – July
1st/2nd: Practices will consist of both instruction and some game play during practices, as well as with other towns. Parent coaches pitch to players, and gloves and appropriate footwear required. Participants will receive three pitches and then issued a tee for the fourth attempt.
3rd/4th: Teams will practice and scrimmage each other, as well as playing games against teams from towns nearby. All participants will have the chance to play in games. Practices will be led by the local high school teams and games led by parent coaches.

Basketball

Baton
Learn the basics of twirling the baton. Participants will develop a routine over the course of the programs that will be performed! A baton is needed for this program. Beginner: 3rd -4th grade, Advanced: 5th -6th grade.

Blastball
3 –4 years of age
Blastball teaches the basic T-Ball, baseball, and softball fundamentals of hitting, throwing, and fielding while emphasizing the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship.

Swimming Lessons
Group Lessons:
Group lessons are taught by certified Water Safety Instructors following the current American Red Cross program.
Parent/Child Aquatics – Designed for children 18 months to 4 years.
30 min/day—A parent or other care-giving adult is required to accompany each child in the water and participate in the classes.
Level 1 – Recommended ages 4–6
45 min/day—Introduction to water skills. Orient to aquatic environment and create a sound foundation for aquatic and safety skills.
Level II – Recommended ages 4–7
45 min/day—Fundamental aquatic skills. Teaches fundamental aquatic locomotion and safety skills.
Level III – Recommended ages 6–9
45 min/day—Stroke development. Increase swimming competency and practice safety and non-swimming rescue skills.
Level IV – Recommended ages 7–10
45 min/day—Stroke improvement. Develops confidence in the strokes learned and to improve other aquatic skills.
Level V – Recommended ages 8–12
45 min/day—Stroke refinement plus introduction of butterfly, surface dives and spring board diving.
Level VI – Recommended ages 10–13
Swimming and skill proficiency. Develop maximum efficiency and endurance for strokes and other aquatic activities.
Basic Water Rescue – Recommended ages 12+
Skills and information will be taught to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. This course will also prepare individuals for aquatic emergencies by teaching them how to protect themselves while assisting others. Students will be certified as a shallow water guard.
GuardStart – Recommended ages 12-14
A stepping stone between Basic Water Rescue and Lifeguard Training. This program will introduce students to the skills needed for entry to the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course. Class will focus on communication and decision making skills as well as the basic responsibilities of a lifeguard.
The GuardStart program involves a significant amount of physical activity. Before entering the program, participants must demonstrate these skills: Swim the front crawl 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side, tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs, submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet under water.*Child may be moved to another level depending on skills & abilities.

Private lessons are available by arrangement with a certified Water Safety Instructor.
