Garbage and Recycling

Garbage Services

Residential customers shall be provided with a toter or toters from the City’s contracted garbage hauler and use of these toters is mandatory. Orange City Sanitation is contracted to remove non-recyclable materials.

The size/number of options for toters are as follows:

If you need a larger garbage bin for your weekly pick-up, you are welcome to upgrade at any time for an additional charge on your monthly utility bill. Please call City Hall at 712-707-4885.

If additional containers are set out for pickup, they must be labeled with a garbage tag that may be purchased at City Hall or Orange City Sanitation for $1 each.

If you have large items such as furniture or appliances, please call Orange City Sanitation at 712-737-2645 and coordinate arrangements with them directly. It is illegal to drop off anything outside of their business hours and/or without checking in with the office first.

Recycling Services

Orange City Sanitation is contracted to remove recyclable materials. A 65 gallon blue recycling toter will be provided. To upgrade sizes please call Orange City Sanitation at 712-737-2645.

Recycle pick up (blue container) is scheduled for the first and third week of the month that your pick up day lands on. Click here to find your scheduled day. If you have extra cardboard, you may drop off during Orange City Sanitation’s business hours after checking in the front office.

Please leave your recycling container with your address when you move.

Materials do not need to be separated. There is no need to remove labels or bands from cans and bottles. Clean only enough to prevent odors.

  • CFL & Fluorescent light bulbs are accepted at the Northwest IA Area Solid Waste Household Hazardous Material Regional Collection Center by appointment.

Textiles

Batteries & Cell phones

Due to fire hazard- no batteries and cell phones will be accepted at the Recycling Center. (But are accepted at the Northwest IA Area Solid Waste Household Hazardous Material Regional Collection Center by appointment). Additionally, the City of Orange City sponsors an E-Recycling event twice a year for disposal of these items.

Residential Electronic Recycling

The Cities of Orange City & Alton co-sponsor a free e-recycling program twice a year (spring and fall). All citizens of Orange City and Alton who would like to utilize the e-recycling program will need to go to the City Office to pick up a free tag. You will need one tag regardless of the number of items. If you do not have a tag, you will be asked to provide identification.

Can & Bottle Redemption

Cans and bottles can be donated to the Pride of the Dutchmen Band at all local grocery stores. Redemption centers can be found in the neighboring communities of Le Mars and Sioux Center.

Household Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous materials (HHM) are corrosive, flammable, toxic, or reactive. Any products that have labels with DANGER, WARNING, or CAUTION may also be HHM.

Every year, Orange City and Alton join with Northwest Iowa Area Landfill to sponsor a household hazardous material recycling. This annual event alternates location between Orange City and Alton every year.

  • Spot & stain removers
  • Pesticides & herbicides
  • Oil based paint
  • Latex paint*

*Unusable latex paint received will be charged a $1/gal fee. Unusable latex paint is of poor quality and cannot be reused. Completely dried latex paint can be disposed of with your regular garbage. Mixing it with cat litter, sawdust, or wood chips will help to dry out latex paint.

HHM Advice

  1. Always follow the product’s use, storage, and disposal label directions.
  2. Never store HHM in food containers.
  3. Make sure lids are tight and secure on all stored HHM
  4. Buy only as much product as you think you will need.
  5. Try to use it all for its intended purpose.
  6. Always use labels!

Northwest Iowa Landfill

Northwest Iowa Area Landfill consists of all the incorporated and unincorporated communities within Lyn, Osceola, Sioux, O’Brien, and Clay counties. In cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, they have established this facility to provide residents with a local disposal of household hazardous materials.

This service is free for all residents within the service area. However, user fees may be assessed for small quantity generators. Call 712-324-4026 to determine if your business would be categorized as a small quantity generator.
